Millbrook validates EconoSpeed fuel and CO2 savings in recent testing

Recent field trials of Zeta Automotive’s  Econospeed system have produced fuel savings in the region of 3% on buses in a live  service operating environment in both the UK and Sweden.

Over a 6-week period 50 buses in each market at 2 depots were monitored for fuel saving performance. This thorough evaluation involved initial monitoring of fuel usage without the Econospeed system being switched on, followed by 2 periods where the system was alternately switched on or off on half of the buses under evaluation.

Having established the fuel saving performance, the results were then validated during independent, controlled testing at Millbrook test track. This independent testing evaluated the impact of Econospeed under different driving conditions involving type of route and driving style.

This was then combined with a range of configurable Econospeed settings which determine the extent to which Econospeed impacts the rate of acceleration.

This independent analysis drew some interesting conclusions. We identified that Econospeed can save fuel across all driving conditions and that the level of fuel saving can be optimised because Econospeed is a configurable system, which means the control of the level of fuel saved sits with the operator who can determine the Econospeed settings to be applied to their own fleet.

Also identified was the impact of Econospeed in an Inter urban environment which showed that fuel savings can be just as likely as the more “Stop start” conditions of an urban route. These findings have served to expand our thinking on the potential application for Econospeed and based on the fuel saving performance evaluation from Millbrook, this leads us to recommend the system across both urban and inter urban operating conditions.

It was very clear from the Millbrook testing that the system could intervene when the driver would otherwise have asked for an unnecessary rate of acceleration. This of course can vary from driver to driver but by using Econospeed a level of consistency and control was possible, resulting in validation of the fuel savings achieved through Econospeed in the recent trials in the UK and Sweden. The fact that the device is configurable, leaves control up to the Bus operator and allows this flexible approach to optimise fuel savings across all types of routes and driving styles.

Supporting the system is a range of Telematics management reports that accurately feature fuel usage and driving style to really highlight the ongoing impact of Econopseed and the fuel and CO2 saving benefits.
